I've been mulling over my fence problem today. I looked for more fence supplies on craig's list and came across an ad for railroad ties. The ad mentioned that some people attach them to the bottom of their fence to keep their dogs from digging out. This gave me the idea that I could buy 6 ft. field fence, some 6 ft. T-posts, and staple the field fence to railroad ties along the bottom with giant staples.
It seemed like such a good idea that I went to Home Depot at lunch to look at the things I had seen online. Unfortunately, the Home Depot didn't have any 6 ft. field fence. It did have 5 ft.x100ft. It was so heavy there was no way I was going to be able to work with it even if I could get it home.
I vetoed that idea and went to look at kennel panels, the ones I wanted yesterday. I was disappointed to see that they were very flimsy. On one side they had stretcher poles but on the other side they were only wired every foot. My dog would be out of that in a few minutes. So much for that idea.
I ended up buying 2 T-posts and these staple nails. I am planning to go look at the railroad ties and, if I can drag one around by myself, I will buy enough to secure the bottom of the dog run. I have wire that I will weave through the chainlink and then I will staple it to the railroad tie...at least that's the plan. If that works, I can put off my big fence project for a little while longer. My current priorities are: tile rental house and get it rented, pay off mortgage, then build the fence.
My fence chewing dog managed to get her muzzle off today but I had wired one of the dog houses in front of her favorite chewing spot so surprisingly she didn't chew any new holes. Tomorrow, if I remember, I will go to the nearby do-it-yourself fence company and see if they sell any strong fence wire in less than 100 ft. lengths so that maybe I can lift it myself. It might cost more but hiring help would cost more too.

How did you spend your days pre dog??
You'll never be able to drag a railroad tie by yourself. I was shocked at how much they weigh when we decided to use a few in our yard. My husband ( 6'2" 260 lbs) and I had a VERY hard time carrying them. There may be some "lighter" ones out there, that just means they are more dried up and will not last as long before they rot.
Good Luck!
Lizzie, a lot more tv, trying to garden (and failing), and cooking. I miss cooking.
Dot, awww...All my ideas run in to roadblocks like this. Well, hopefully they have some shorter pieces that I can handle. Maybe I can hook them together.
