Home For The Holidays

I stayed home for the holidays this year and had many things that I was going to get done around this place. On Saturday I relaxed a bit and did some cleaning. Sunday I came down with a cold. Ugh. Monday and Tuesday I have cleaned and napped and been miserable. At least I got a little bit done.

I swept and mopped the floors, dusted the curtains and lampshades, pruned a tree, did 4 loads of laundry, cleaned the shower, got a dog adopted, and see that clean corner of the couch? I sorted the pile of mail that has been stacking up there for the last 6 months. That's right. After I paid off my mortgage I let some things slide. One of those things was writing all of my expenses down in a notebook. Another one of those things was sorting my mail. It was a huge pile and it glared at me every time I went in to the RV. Now it is all sorted and that leads me to my next chore...shredding my old documents. I'll put that on next year's to-do list.

Even though I have been inconvenienced by this sore throat and runny nose, I am still happy with the amount of work I got done around here. I didn't get any major projects done but I accomplished many small things that I have been putting off and that nag at me every day as I walk past them.

Tomorrow I will go back to work and try not to spread my cold although I am pretty sure that is where my cold came from. Only 3 days of work until a 3 day weekend. I wish I had more weekends like this. My next holiday after New Years isn't until April. I will try not to think about that.

Not sure if you will find this helpful, but for last 15-20 years, I have used this guideline for shredding and keeping certain documents and bills: I keep one full calendar year plus the current year as it builds up. This way, I never have more than 2 years. For example, next month I will shred my 2010 bills.

I do keep some other items around for longer than that. I keep mutual find statements, IRA/401(k) statements longer, as well as canceled checks/images. When I receive annual mutual fund statements, I get rid of the individual transaction confirmations.

I have had a cough and cold through out as well. Its just going on way too long. I am impressed you have got so much done as I have been feeding people but very little else. I have taken an extra weeks annual leave so hopefully I will get back in the game.

I definitely need a better system, Dave. I usually just grab a bunch of the old ones and shred them. It is time for a little more attention to my records. Maybe I will even buy myself a big kids filing cabinet for the new house.

Well, Lizzie, it is pretty easy to feed my dogs so I have more free time than you did. I probably only got 1/4 done that I had planned but any is better than nothing.
