Mortgage Progress for May 2014

Guess what time it is?  Time for my mortgage progress update!  Yay!  This was another good month and I was able to put $1,500 extra towards the principle.  That means that I am in the 50's now!

Mortgage total: $58,622
3 years and 5 months to go (if I contribute $1,200 extra per month)

If I can keep myself from going on a shopping spree, I think I can get it paid off faster than that.  My sister gave me a $25 gift card to Home Depot for my birthday.  I was thrilled because my Home Depot list is very long.  I started making a list of only the important things and it was still over $100.  I narrowed it down to purple paint for the kitchen, grey paint for the bathroom, one (pr two or three) sample tile(s) for the kitchen back-splash, and one sample tile for the bathroom back-splash.  That is more than $25.  Plus, once I decide on the tile for the back-splash I will have to go back and get enough for the whole job.  So, then I thought, do I really need to do this now?  Can it wait until the Fall when going to Home Depot won't give me heat stroke?  Ok, ok, there is nothing urgent about remodeling the bathroom or the kitchen.  My nephew will be back in a few weeks and I know he won't care if I have done anything to the kitchen.  It would be better if I saved some money for the day trips I hope to drag him on.

It is decided then.  The gift card can wait.  Remodeling can wait.  I should stay in saving mode for now and focus on spending time with my nephew and paying off my mortgage.

Yes it is! I have to keep reminding myself, I have enough projects! No need to buy more just yet.

Hi Daizy - thanks for adding my other blog to your blogroll :)

I'm trying to keep my 'wants' or our new home to a minimum - it's hard though!

Well done on your mortgage over payment!

I've been buying discounted gift cards for Home Depot and other places. I think I have been saving 10% off the face value for Home Depot. Giftcardgranny.com is once source so when you are ready to do your projects you could at least save money.

Thanks for the reminder, Juhli. I keep forgetting about those sites. Looks like I could save 8.5% pretty easily on a $100 card. And I would have no trouble at all spending $100 at HD.
