Saving For An Unknown Goal

Mortgage balance:  $72,511
Savings:  $6,000

It is tempting to start paying off some extra principle but then I think about all of the other projects that I would like to save for and I am content to keep the money in the bank.  Also, my mother is talking more about moving to a larger house (and me moving with them) so I am hesitant to put much money in to upgrading this house until I know if I will even be living here next year.  We are going to see a 5 acre property with a 3 bedroom house on Saturday.  I like it because there is plenty of room to expand.  We could build a nice little Cape Cod style 2 bedroom 2 bath guest house for my parents and nephew and I could have the house.  Of course when I told my mom that she said she wanted the 3 bedroom house.  Ok then.  I'd settle for a 2 bedroom 1 bath guest house.  I just want my own kitchen and a place to escape from barking dogs.  My mom thinks that having to build something is too much work and money but she is humoring me and willing to take a look.  All of the places with guest houses that I have seen have neighbors that are too close by for as many dogs as I have.  5 acres would be super-cool...except for rattlesnakes and other predators.  I would need to build a block walled yard.  I know that a wall costs between $6k and $10k.  So, guest house $70k, block wall $10k.  I guess I will keep saving my money.

A world of even more endless possibilities is opening up! There is a lot to be said for living with family, especially as there is room to live together but sort of apart. And the Daizy property empire grows!

Not to intrude into your lifestyle choices, but don't you think you would have more personal freedom if you were not living with your parents. It is fine to live not too far away from them (I live about 17 miles from mine) so you can visit without planning a big trip, but you are nearly 40 years old IIRC from a previous post.

Yes Lizzie, together but separate would be the best solution. I hope we can find something that fits all of our needs.

I would definitely have more freedom Dave, but there is a lot I haven't mentioned about my parents. They are one misstep from needing an assisted living home. If that happened I would most likely be the sole guardian of my nephew so helping my parents at this point is actually saving me from being a single parent. I do hope we can find a living arrangement that gives me a little more freedom while also keeping the convenience of being close by.

Woo! You are going to be the real estate mogul of Arizona some day! I really admire all you accomplish as a single working gal. A really good example to people. A little self-discipline goes a long way (a good reminder to myself, too!).
