My realtor wanted to know what time I wanted the closing and I said at 1pm because I wanted to go to the house afterwards. She told me it takes 3 days to get the keys so I was bummed. When I bought my last house I got the keys at closing because it was new construction. Now, with the holiday the following Monday, I probably won't get the keys until Tuesday, almost a week after closing. I had to tell the tree trimmer to wait a week so that I actually have the keys in my hand. This is getting closer and closer to March. I just hope those snakes don't wake up. I think I should start building my snake fence out here while I am waiting.

You were right when you said that nothing goes smoothly on these short sales. It is definitely yours now though?
Do you get to do a final walk-through before closing? If so, leave a window unlocked or make a copy of the key. Once you close, you own the house. Don't let anyone tell you that you have to wait three days before you can enter. That's crazy!
Nothing is definite until I get the keys. I didn't hear any update today so now I have to try not to worry all weekend.
I do get a final walk through. I certainly don't want to waste a whole weekend just waiting for the key.

I can just see me meeting the neighbors while I am climbing through the window!
The reason for the key delay is because most REOs are rekeyed to a universal key - my FNMA key gets me into all FNMA foreclosures in my state for example. Obviously they don't want to be giving you a universal key yet at the same time won't have the house rekeyed ahead of time because too many sales fall through at the last minute. If I were you, I would mention at the passing that plan to have the house rekeyed yourself - have your agent let you in, her key will still work, and then either you or a locksmith can switch out the locksets to ones of your choice.
