Pesky Neighbor Dogs

When I got home today I was going to take 2 dogs for a walk. I can only handle 2 at a time which, of course, makes the dog who is left behind howl in misery. Before I got the leashes, I let the dogs run around the front yard. That's the yard I made myself with fence posts and wire. Not exactly secure. So, my dogs start barking and I look out and there are the 2 neighbor dogs. Oh great. Yes, they start fighting through the fence. The little guy is right in the middle of it all. He's a little fighter. I got a leash and dragged my dog inside, then picked up my little dog who scratched me because he didn't want to go in. Finally the neighbor's dogs wandered towards the back so, of course, my dogs ran to the dog run where the resumed the fight. I know those neighbor's dogs come over during the day when I am gone because there are many places in the chain link where the wire is crushed or pulled. They are going to ruin my dog run soon.

Psycho Pitty, as I like to call her, was so worked up that she had bloody teeth. That's when I decided to throw a glass of water on her to break it up. I was thrilled that it worked. Then I calmed my dogs down inside. I don't know what would have happened if I had met those other dogs while walking my dogs. I am afraid my dogs would really get hurt. Just what I need, a big vet bill. So besides being tired after work and just wanting to watch a little TV, I remember my other excuse for not walking my dogs...Psycho Pitty and her Sharpei friend. The Sharpei is actually not a fighter. He usually just watches from a distance. I really want a nice block wall yard. No neighbor dogs allowed! At the very least, I can't quit until I can afford a block wall.

Yikes sounds like you need to get that wall sooner rather than later, it will probably work out a lot cheaper than any vet bill.

I'm a cat person but have seen some dog fights which turn my blood cold.

i hope you can sort something out before they really get at each other.

Yipes! I say you report it to animal control. What if those neighbor dogs had med a child outside and not you or your pets? Scary.

Dogs are territorial pack animals. Outside their territory they are usually milder.
Also, dogs regularly meeting (e.g. walked together in a park) quickly establish a kind of pack-hierarchy, and things calm down. Making the "pecking order" does take some fighting.
All this is valid for regular dogs. I don't know how does it apply to dogs bred (and inbred!) for fighting, equipped with 1 ton bite jaws...

Hi Daizy...I stumbled upon your blog a few weeks ago when I googled something (shipping container homes), and found it so interesting, I decided to read it from the very beginning! It was like reading a book. I finished up with your last post just now, I'm kinda bummed that I've caught up, because I don't have hours of entertainment now!

Anyway, during the last couple of weeks there have been times I've wanted to suggest some random tip or trick, but then I'd realize that the problem you had at the time of the post was a couple of years ago and was probably no longer relevant.

I love that you have fostered the dogs, and that brings me to one of my "tips and tricks for dog training" if you haven't already learned it: Vinegar and water in a spray bottle. When the dogs are fighting through the fence (my dogs do this all the time!) give them a blast of it in the nose area (try to avoid squirting directly in the eyes though, it might sting). Don't mix the concoction too strong; maybe half and half? That was a tip from my dog obedience teacher, works wonders. It will get to the point where all you will have to do is shake the bottle at them and they will mind you right away.

Okay this is turning out to be a very long comment, but after a look into 3 years of your life I had a lot to say! (I still do, but I'm sure I'll be back for more!)

And yeah, if you can ever fit it into your budget a wall around your yard would be great, I wish that I had one, my dogs are able to jump a 6 foot fence, a wall I don't think they would be able to manage.

Anyhow...so great getting to know you! And I'm looking forward to future updates!

Cheers!

I don't know why people let dogs roam. Besides getting in ights with other dogs, they could bite someone, get hit by a car, get lost, run into a wild animal, etc.

Leashes are cheap.

Kate, those neighbor dogs are really annoying. I need to figure out where to put a walled yard. All of my buildings are temporary...except the shed. Maybe I can wall in the shed.

Simple in France, the dog is really nice, to me anyway. Just likes to fight other dogs. I had a foster dog like that but I would never let her roam the neighborhood.

KoBold, I hope my dogs would back down if they met her outside the pen. Hopefully they are just putting on a good show to defend their home. But then again, the pit mix that I had for a while would really attack on occasion...especially if she thought another dog was eyeing her squeeky ball.

Hi Corrie, thanks for the comment. I should try that on my own dogs. 2 of them pick on the other one. I would have to buy vinegar though. I've never liked the stuff.

I don't ever use it for cooking, I don't care for it either as a food staple. I use it for cleaning the most. It works just as well as "Lime Away" and those kind of cleaners on hard water and soap scum, and is non toxic and the best part...it's cheap! (A couple bucks for a gallon bottle)

You can use it in your laundry to freshen up mildewy smelling towels too.
