I spent $125 at the grocery store today. My food budget is $100 for the month and my dog food budget is $33. I have pretty much used it all up. I have $8 left for iced tea and carrots for the rest of the month. I did stock up on some things so I could make it to the end of the month if I had to.
I bought 2 bags of dog food and one bag lasts 10 days. Then I bought 2 bags of pig ears at $15 each and 4 containers of peanut butter for stuffing in dog toys. That is plenty for the dogs. For myself I stocked up on chicken noodle soup. I prefer the plain kind and it's cheap. I did splurge on a few things like cheese crackers, Hawaiian rolls on clearance and some candy. I didn't buy a lot of candy because it will be cheap after Halloween. They were out of iced tea and chocolate milk. They can't seem to keep Arizona green tea in stock and chocolate milk always sells out when it goes on sale. I wasn't fast enough.
I didn't go too crazy at the store but I did buy more than usual. I never thought I would need a second job to pay for dog treats. But really they don't need all of those treats, I'm spoiling them. What I should save my money for is a large chain link fence. The dogs are getting bigger and my little dog run is not going to keep them in forever. They need more room to run. Maybe I should have fostered cats?

I am almost out of money on my food budget for the month as well.....but my pantry is well stocked. I have one cat and his bag of food lasts well over a month. I do supplement his dry food with wet food once a day...but I think a cat would be cheaper than a dog.
However, you love your dogs so that is great!!!!!
There is a reason that our prehistoric ancestors domesticated the dog before any other animal: they are the perfect companion for us. Cats just don't compare.
I used to love that chicken noodle soup when I was a kid. Today, I have to watch my salt intake, so I don't eat it any more. Also, I really don't like chicken all that much, but I guess there really isn't much chicken in it.
Dogs love to be spoiled!
Lulu, cats are definitely cheaper especially my cat because she only likes dry food and refused to eat wet food or treats. Maybe that's part of the reason why I am spoiling the dogs so much. They are so enthusiastic about everything that I feed them.
Executioner, my dogs think I am a food dispenser, my cat thinks I am a warm pillow. I feel used. :)
Over the Cubicle, that low-sodium soup is nasty stuff.
I like being able to feed scraps to the dogs. My cat won't eat scraps. There were many times as a kid that I wanted to feed my yucky food to the dogs like I saw on tv. Now I can, but I don't force myself to stay at the table until I'm finished anymore. :p
That's a lot of peanut butter for the dogs! Is that only a one-month supply?
Thumbs up for cats!

There is a camper near where I work, it sells grilled chicken.
Last year it has been closed for a couple of months. It was re-opened with a hand-scrawled sign saying
"NEW FIRM - NEW FLAVOURS"
After getting up from rolling on the floor laughing and dusting ourselves (with my colleague), we said to ourselves: "Uh-huh, nice one. Too bad they still all taste like chicken, right?"
:-)
Big Sis, they are small jars and I use one a week more or less to fill their toys once a day.
KoBold, we call those places "roach coaches". Maybe it wasn't really chicken the first time.
Get rain checks! If you want something that's on sale, and they don't have it, spend 5 minutes at customer service to get a rain check. They are usually good for 30 days.
I make our own iced tea for pennies, compared to what pre- bottled tea costs. I buy 100 count boxes of tea when on sale (combine with double cpns is possible) for $2. I fill a large dutch oven with water and bring it to a boil. I add 8 tea bags and let them steep until good and strong. Once cooled, I refrigerate. It costs me about 8 cents/gallon and is unsweetened, our preference. I add herbs, use herbal tea, add lemon etc to change it up.
