Critter Of The Week

I have some new un-welcome house guests in my RV. Can you see them hanging out on my 5th wheel hitch?

I thought there were only a few of them until I saw them going in a hole. Good thing I didn't try to spray them thinking there were just one or two. I'm not sure, but I think they are hornets. I've been comparing pictures of hornets, wasps and yellow jackets and these seem to resemble hornets but I really don't want to get close enough for a good look. They are very active and a bit angry. They always leave a guard outside to watch me.

I've gotten lots of advice on how to get rid of them but unless I have a full bee-suit, I'd rather stay out of their way and wait for winter. Too bad winter is so far away. For now it is too hot to be outside. 107 today. I think today is the hottest day of the year so far. Tomorrow it will cool down to 104. 2 days down, 3 more to go. I'm hoping I'll see some rent money by the end of the week so I have something to look forward to. At least I am trying to stay hopeful. I am just itching to cross another month off of my mortgage plan.

Cool down to 104...how pleasant that sounds :p

I have a friend who is an electrical engineer for a power company. They give those guys cans of ridiculously strong bee/hornet/wasp spray for when they go out to the field to check transformers and stuff. He had two cans with him, set one on top of some switch gear so he could have a free hand to open it. When he did, the hornets came flying out at him so he promptly dropped the remaining can on the ground and ran. That stuff is fool proof as long as you actually spray it.

That's a funny story...and scary. That's what I would probably do except I would trip and lock myself out of the RV somehow. I think my greywater that is watering my tree has created a nice hornet habitat. When I worked in Yuma the bees would swarm around the condensation from the AC. I would hate to stop watering my tree though. Perhaps I'll use my $50 for some wasp traps.
