Another Shake-Up At Work

In February my company laid off 23 people. None of them were from my office so it didn't affect me directly. What did affect me was the 10% pay cut. Nothing else has happened since then so I started to relax a little. I took a few vacation days and went to Disneyland, I went to Nascar, and I even bought some new clothes. Well, today I went in to work and one of our people was missing. They laid her off. Just last month they were telling her she had nothing to worry about, our office was safe. Now they are telling me, don't worry, you have nothing to worry about. I just stare at them with a horrified look on my face and say 'that's what you told Shelly'.

Ok, so it wouldn't be the end of the world if I got laid off. If my house stays rented I have 10 months of living expenses plus unemployment money. I know of a job that I could probably get right now although I would have to relocate. I do hope I keep my current job for at least one year and 7 months. Then my mortgage will be gone and I can get a fun job. I saw 2 cake decorator wanted signs in the last 2 weeks. That is a job I would like to try some day. I have lots of alternative plans, just in case, but it's the unknown that makes me nervous.

The not knowing, but worrying is the worst part of it I think. I can't wait for this economy to turn around.

I am more of a cake eater than a cake decorator :) I knew a girl in college that had a job decorating ice cream cakes.

There will be NO eating of my masterpieces!!! :)

One of those jobs was with Baskin Robbins. I wonder if it would be a very cold job...I would not like to be cold all day even if it was over 100 outside.

You can save the masterpieces. I can just eat the mistakes:P

Please consider maybe just for one month taking what you would make as an extra payment (I know this is a very hard thing to do) and putting it in cash/savings for your emergency fund. It will extend your ability to "weather the storm" and put a little more cushion between having to make much more painful decisions should your job or the tenant's job/ability to pay go away. Yes, even if both happened these would not be permanent conditions but you need to consider extending "survival time" to more than a year in this economy.

Don't worry Anonymous, if I run out of money I'll move in with my parents and beg them to pay off my mortgage for me! Oh wait...did I say that out loud? You are right, 10 months is not a lot in this economy. 10 months is living at my normal budget of $700, it would last 12 months with my extreme budget of $600/m. Unemployment would cover my $800 mortgage if the house was not rented. If it was rented I could survive a lot longer. I am also saving an extra $100 per month for the house maintenance fund.

It sure is stressful, isn't it? The not-knowing must surely be the worst part of it!

I'm sorry to hear that. I just utterly shocked just hearing layoffs everywhere. My friend's hubby got laid off from Remax. My friend's friend got laid of from Dow Chemical after 12yrs. Our Neighbor got axed from a copier repair company after 20yrs.

Saver Queen, yes this not knowing is the worst. I have to keep all my options open yet focus on the job I have now like nothing bad could happen.

rinner, that is sad to hear that your friends have been laid off. I hope they had big emergency funds!
