Looking For A Rat Proof Building

On my "coffee breaks" at work today, I did a little searching for steel buildings. I've seen commercials on TV for those half circle shaped buildings that can be used as garages, sheds, airplane hangars, etc.... Not surprisingly, the web site wouldn't give any prices. I did fill out the form though so I should be getting junk mail soon. I found another site and they had a 40'x50'x12' building for $13k. That sounds very cheap. Of course then there is the cost of delivery, the concrete pad, doors, windows, permits, and then pay someone to put it up. Suddenly it doesn't sound so affordable.

I don't know what I want to do...well, I know what I want, I want a big rat-proof building to instantly appear for free. Since I can't have that I will have to wait and research and decide on the best option for my situation and continue to leave my hood up every night so that the rats don't move in again...I've even heard of people hanging lights off the hood so that the darkness won't attract them. I need a garage!

you don't need a garage. All you need is one or good cats.

You should look into "Sea Crates" or "Shipping Containers". They are usually around $2k and some of them have doors on both ends.

Hi Daizy - I read where someone had put a shipping container like you see on trains on her property in Texas to use as a walk-in storage unit.

I didn't save the information, but could resurrect it if you are interested. The cost was much less than you mention, and it had a couple of windows and a regular walk-thru doorway. I think it is about 40 feet long and 8 or so wide - rather like the shape of a big RV vehicle.

Virtual hugs,

I second the good cats. Or a big fence for your dogs that you can also park your truck behind. That small dog you have would probably 'de-rat' your property pretty quick.

Anonymous, I would like a cat but they don't last long out here. Too many coyotes I guess. Too bad the coyotes don't eat all the rats.

I did look in to shipping containers a few years ago. Even designed a house out of one. I went so far as to call the zoning department before I ordered one and found out they weren't legal in Pima Co. on residential property. Too bad. I would have had one by now.

Over the Cubicle, it does seem pointless to have the ratting dog penned up just feet away from my truck as it gets chewed. On the other hand, Toto got full of cactus needles and dirt when he was after those squirrels. I would probably have to pay vet bills for rat bites and other injuries. And they can't protect it at night. So maybe I need a cat who will sleep on the engine all night.

A cat door to your home or shed will provide a escape route for your cats while coyotes around.

Coyotes are not patient like cats. Good cats will do an excellent job.

Research has shown that the presence of a cat can actually INCREASE the amount rats, since the cats preferentially prey on native animals that may be competing with the rats for food and shelter.

I did have a cat for a while. There was one living here when I bought the place. He disappeared though. I heard a rumor that a neighbor felt sorry for him and let him become an indoor cat.
