I saw another cute old 1966 Ajo Camper for only $600.
It it in much better condition than the other 2 that I looked at and $600 is a great price. But since my renters haven't paid yet I don't have any cash. That's a good thing because that cash is for the mortgage not for campers! I decided a truck camper (the kind that sit on the back of a truck) would be better anyway. That way my cat could ride in the back. She couldn't ride in a pull behind camper. I mean she could but with a truck camper she would have access to the truck through the window. Who knows what she would be doing in the pull behind camper. Probably going crazy and shredding the curtains.
My other expensive temptation is the puppies. The people from the animal shelter list the dogs that are on the E-list which is the death list. Those that are too old, too young, too sick or have been at the shelter too long if it is over-crowded, get on the list. The rescue groups try to grab the dogs off the list before they are put down but they can only take them if they have foster homes for them. Then all the foster dogs go to PetSmart/Petco on the weekends to be adopted.
This momma and 8 tiny puppies were on the list today. I added up the cost of creating a dog friendly area in my mobile home and it was around $300. That would be for a doggy door to an outside kennel and a crate indoors. I would have to hook up the air conditioner and section off a small area for them to hang out inside. I would have the puppies for about 10 weeks. Puppies get adopted pretty quickly. The question is, how long would I have the momma dog? It could be forever. This idea will take more research but I like research. It keeps me busy.

Nine dogs (8 puppies) is, wow, a lot of work. Only you will know if you are up to it or not.
It is so sad to see animals in that situation. My dog was next in line at the local shelter. Adult dogs, as you say, are hard to adopt out.
You have a lucky dog. I don't know if they would let me foster puppies since I'm not home most of the day but lots of people leave their dogs home alone right? I figure momma would be busy with her puppies all day and they would entertain eachother but I don't really know. The reason I don't have a dog is that I don't think I have enough time for one so if only momma was left I would feel bad about leaving her alone all day. It wouldn't hurt to ask I guess.
And you have a lucky cat - unless you show up at home with 9 dogs. I can't tell you the trouble a friend of mine has had with her cats when she started bringing in strays. The once well-behaved queen of the roost was surplanted by all the newbies and everyone had behavior problems. As her house was destroyed, she finally had to bring them all to the Humane Society. Don't ruin your cat's life. She probably enjoys being an only child.
Yep, probably the best thing you could do is ask the people at the rescue groups about it as much as possible. They would know best what you would be getting into.
Yes Anonymous, that is a problem to consider. I was planning to set up the puppies in the mobile home and leave the cat in the RV and never the 2 shall meet but if I have a momma dog for a long time this would be a problem. The momma could not be a long time resident.
This just broke my heart. DH and I cannot wait to buy a house with some land so we can take in more animals from the shelter.
And I would say that as long as the home is loving, being alone all day would still be better for the mama and her babies than being stuck in and put down at a shelter.
ohno, i couldnt resist either but not sure home alone is good for mum. Maybe best to wait until your 'retirement'.

Frugalchick, I know, I really want a house and fenced yard so that I can help more animals (and kids too). I'm just not sure I am ready to work that long to afford all of that. But then there's nothing like pictures of sad dogs to motivate me.
Lizze, yes, leaving that dog home alone to escape or get in to trouble would be bad. Definitely something I want to do when I semi-retire though.
