Pondering A Chicken

Yes, I was pondering a chicken. I was looking on craig's list and I saw an ad for a free chicken. It read something like this:

**Free to good home. One laying chicken. My other hens don't like her so she needs a loving home where she won't get picked on.**

Oh boy, I thought, a free chicken! I want a chicken some day. Maybe I should get this chicken. Then I thought, where would it live? Well, I had also seen a large dog crate on craig's list for $75. The chicken would be safe from dogs and coyotes in there. I could build it a perch and a nesting box. I could buy food for it and it would lay eggs for me.

But then reality hit, do I want another chore everyday? Do I want another creature that needs to be baby-sat if I go on a trip? Do I have $75 to spend on a crate? Do I have money to buy food for it? Do I even eat more than 2-4 eggs a month? What was I thinking?!!! This chicken idea was way more expensive and more trouble than buying an occasional dozen eggs.

I'm sure glad I didn't run out and adopt a 'free' chicken. Now, about that free horse...

Someone on the street behind me got a chicken recently. It crows every morning. Not just once either. They aren't allowed in the city, but I don't think anyone really cares.

That would be another negative. Chickens are LOUD when they lay an egg and these RV walls are thin. Does that chicken wake you up?

On the weekends it can wake me up if I am not sleeping soundly. It is not close enough to be loud, just close enough to be heard.

On workdays, I am already up. Later in the year, when the sun beats my alarm clock, it may wake me up.
