Double Check Those Bills

I received my gas bill on Saturday. $52, of which $35 is the turn on fee. Nothing unusual except...I gave them a $200 check when I started the service on Dec. 28th! I checked my bank statement and the check was cashed on Dec. 31st. Hmmm.

This morning I called the gas company and listened to the hold music for 10 minutes before giving up and leaving a call-back number. They called me back and I explained that my $200 was missing. The customer service agent put me on hold...for 15 minutes! She finally returned and said my money had been applied to the previous bill for that address. Haha. That's not funny. Those people cost me thousands of dollars, I definitely don't want to pay down their gas bill for them(they owed much more than $200). She agreed and promised to credit MY account with the money. Gee thanks. So good of you.

I am very glad that I looked at the bill and didn't just pay it. I rarely just pay it but when it gets hectic some things can get overlooked. Anyway, it should be all fixed now.

Checking into it sure paid off for you. I am pretty bad about looking through all the details all the time.

Ech, so frustrating. And yet I totally agree, it's so important to check those bills!!! I've found many mistakes too.

I guess I expected the utility companies to be very strict about verifying names and account numbers but it seems they they don't always follow procedure. I expect problems with my phone bill but not the gas bill. Oh well, I should know by now that they are all run by fallible humans. Although sometimes computers are worse!
