Not So Fast

I thought I was home-free once Thursday was over and my wisdom teeth were out.  Not so fast.  I waited everyday for the pain to lessen but instead it got worse.  I looked up "dry socket".  All the symptoms were there.  The internet said that the dentist could put medicine in the hole and it would relieve the symptoms.  I called the oral surgeon and was able to get an appointment around lunch time.  What the internet failed to mention was the INTENSE PAIN that I was going to feel and the dentist jammed the medicated gauze in to the space where my tooth was.  Wow.  That might have been more painful than getting the tooth pulled.  They said it would feel better in 20 minutes and they were right but by the time I went home, 4 hours later, the gauze was already coming out.  I tried to cut it off but that didn't work so I stuffed it back in myself which was a lot less painful than when the dentist did it.  I don't think force was really necessary.  The main idea is to tuck the end of the gauze, not bruise my jaw.  But anyway, I survived again and I am supposed to go back Friday for more gauze.  Maybe I'll move to Alaska instead.  They will never find me there.

OUCH! Sounds like a nightmare I was glad to avoid 4 years ago. And it made me more appreciate the clean bill of health I got from dentist today after a 6-month visit.

Ya, I really wish I knew when it would be over so I could count the days. I read that it takes 7 days so that's only 4 more days. That seems like forever. I did find some relief from some over the counter remedies so that is a big help.

I had my last two wisdom teeth pulled out a few months ago. I was on Panadiene Forte for two week. My dentist told me the most important key to a successful recovery was to keep food matter out of the holes. Good Luck

Anonymous, I had to look up that drug name. That is a major pain killer. 2 weeks? Ugh. I keep counting the days. So far the tiny cotton ball with eugenol oil in the hole is doing a great job but I can't wait until it is healed.

Try biting on a moistened tea bag. The tannins in the tea leaves help aid healing, soothe pain and staunch bleeding.

slugmama, that was actually a suggestion on the checkout paper from the oral surgeon. I tried it the day after but didn't notice much difference.

A dentist once told me to crunch down on dispersible aspirin, but not sure. Maybe oil of cloves? Hate to say it but it might be just time.

Yep Lizzie, oil of clove did the trick. Next time I will be prepared.

I'm sorry your experience with you wisdom teeth extraction has been so bad. I had all 4 of mine pulled at the same time in high school and two were impacted. I had no problems at all. My oral surgeon did not allow me to ice my face/cheeks, but instead wrapped my face with gauze to keep pressure to keep the swelling down. He also did not allow me to use a straw. I hope you are feeling better now.

I do feel better now, Marie. Thank you. It took 10 days but I can chew again, although very carefully.
