Precocious Peccaries

The dogs started barking like crazy this morning while I was getting ready for work in the RV. I thought maybe a stray dog was near the dog run so I looked outside. I saw 2 large animals running away. My first thought was, "Oh, someone lost 2 chow chows". Then I thought, wait, chows aren't salt and pepper color. Oh my gosh! They were Javelinas! Big ones too. About as big as my biggest dog. Must have been 60 pounds. Javelinas scare me because they can kill a dog in nothing flat. They can also do some damage to humans if provoked. I knew they were around from the nibbled cactus but I had never seen any on my property and I was very surprised that they were so close to the RV and the dogs. I hope I don't see them again any time soon.

Here is a link because they were too fast so I don't have any pictures.

Scary! I've never heard of that animal before. I've from northern CA.

They look like wild boar that we have in France, but their teeth are much more pointy.

I have heard of pecari but not specifically javelinas. Not sure i would ever go out doors if i lived near year. The worst thing that happens around here is a bunny might poop in your garden!

I looked at wikipedia and they said maybe part of the hippo family. Kind of cool to have hippos running about the place!

Thanks for the link to the interesting and informative article. It's uncanny that my daughter is watching "Go Diego Go" right now and she answered their prompted question... they were identifying a collared peccary.

Marie, I had never heard of it either until I moved here. I feel like I moved to South America or something.

Sue, ooohhh...wild boar sound very scary. We have those in Texas and Oklahoma. They get much bigger than javelinas. I just saw one in the paper that was almost 800 pounds.

Lizzie, I'm sure glad they don't get as big as hippos! I would never leave the house either!
