Too Soon

Are you sure the weekend is over? Can't I have just one more day? Let's see, my next 3 day weekend is in 2 weeks. That is still too far away. This week I have my skin cancer surgery on Wednesday so I will have to use at least a half day and probably a whole vacation day. I only have 2 1/2 days of vacation left until December 8. I was trying to save 3 days so that I could go somewhere for Thanksgiving week but since my mortgage won't be paid off in November I won't have extra money for a plane ticket so it doesn't really matter that I won't have any vacation days left. It isn't much fun to use vacation days for doctor visits though. Especially when the doctor visits are going to cost $1,200-$2,400. That's like the cost of a nice vacation without actually getting to go anywhere. Oh well.

I hope this is a good week at work. We are moving the office on Friday so I am anticipating a lot of confusion and disarray. And they want us to come in for free on Saturday to help set up and organize. At least they will be buying pizza. Still, I can't say I'm looking forward to it.

Wow, your office wants you to come in on a Saturday without pay to set up after the move? At my former company, we moved twice and they never asked us to come in for free to set up. In fact, we were let out early on the friday once we had everything packed up, keeping me out of the evening rush hour on the trains. Fragile personal items we were advised to take home and bring in ourselves on Monday.

When we arrived at our new location the following Monday morning, we had to unpack the stuff we packed up but the computers and phones were all up and running for the most part.

My first move was to #7 World Trade Center, the building which would come down on 9/11/01 at about 5:30 PM after it caught fire (nobody was killed). However, we had just moved from there across the Hudson River to Jersey City, New Jersey 4 months earlier but it was still a sad sight to see my home-away-from-home for 10 years go down in a heap.

That second move I knew would lead to my eventual retirement, as it triggered the part-time work arrangement I would salvage for next 7 years (including the telecommute gig I had for 2 years). The commute to NJ was just horrible whether it was 1, 2, 3, or 5 days a week.

How scary to see your old office crumble like that! I am hoping I am not at the new office long but maybe I can last another 5 years or so if I have to. One day at a time I guess.
