Weekend At Last

I was talking to my boss about the company website this afternoon when I saw an email pop up on his screen. It was from me and said that I quit. I looked over at my desk and saw my jokester co-worker scampering away from my desk. Well, I said, it looks like I quit so I get to go home now. My boss was amused but said I couldn't quit. I said, that's right, you said I couldn't quit until you retire so when are you going to retire? He wouldn't give me a firm date but hinted that it will be around 5 years. I don't know if I can wait that long.

The weekend is here, finally, and part of me wants to sleep late, watch movies all day, eat a big bowl of ice cream and make all of my chores magically go away. I don't think that is going to happen. The dogs won't let me sleep in too late and I have a long to-do list. The weather will be great so I don't have any excuse not to get a lot done. But I don't mind the chores too much. Just having a day off after 5 weeks of work is wonderful in itself.

Good stuff. 5 years is pretty well my max. I hope it is sooner.

Hope you find at least a little time to relax this weekend.

I'm starting to relax...if I could just stop thinking about all the stuff I have to do!

Just knowing you don't have to get up in the morning and go back to work should be really nice.

Make a list. Sometimes gettting it all out and on paper stop it just going around in your head all the time.
Enjoy your weekend.

When the time comes, I assume you will tell your boss of your resignation/retirement in person, not via an email. It will be a lot more memorable, like my retirement announcement was (and I had to tell two managers at the same time). Also, I did in it writing, as in on a piece of paper, so I have a record of it.

I still get chills thinking about that afternoon 13 months ago when gave my notice. I handed my two managers the short note and let them read it. It was a short meeting, taking about 3 minutes.

[In the last few years years of working, I put my office PC into a "locked" mode by hitting ctl-alt-delete whenever I left my desk for more than a minute. This required my password to make it usable again so nobody could do what your sneaky coworker did.]

I look forward to reading about a similar retirement story from you soon, Daizy. :)

Lizzie, my list was getting so long it was starting to depress me! Then I had to make another list to prioritize them. I wish I had a longer weekend.

Hi Dave, did you give them any notice like 2 weeks or just quit on that day? Did they just say ok and that was it?

I gave them one month's notice, on September 30, 2008. My last day was October 31, 2008. I was working only 2 days a week at the time, so I had only 9 more working days left after the gave-notice day ended (and I gave them notice late in the afternoon).

I was working on one big project at the time, and my goal was to get it done in my remaining days. I finished it at 4 PM on my last day, 45 minutes before I left the office for the last time. :)
