Going With The Flow

The plan for today was to bring one of my dogs (the pit bull/Labrador mix) to work with me, then the rescue lady would pick it up, get it spayed at the vet and drop it off at 5pm. Well, she sent me a text message at 6:20am asking if we could meet at the Safeway parking lot a little earlier. I said ok and rushed to get everything together. I got there 5 minutes early and my dog and I walked around the parking lot. Then my phone rang and the rescue lady said that the vet had cancelled all of the appointments for the day.

She said she could still take my dog for the day but since the lady has 15 dogs at the moment and my dog, who came from her house last week, gets stressed out by other dogs, I decided to take my dog to work. Most of the people at work, including the boss, were out traveling anyway so no one really cared that I brought my dog. She was very good at work. She only howled once when I first got there and left her to go toast myself a bagel.

Since the dog isn't fixed I can't bring her to adoption events yet. Too bad. I wanted to go to the bike night event next Thursday. She looks like a good dog for a biker. Strong and tough. I gave her another squeaky toy yesterday and she shredded it in a few minutes. That ruined my idea of buying extra squeakers and repairing the toys. Today I looked up 'pit bull toys'. There are very few. The black Kong toy and one called Galileo Bone made by Nyla were 2 that were highly recommended and I will buy them the next time I have some extra money. No use buying any more cheap toys. It's like giving the dog dollar bills dipped in peanut butter. I just sit back and watch my money get shredded.

Peanut butter covered dollar bills...ha!

You may be able to find someone to adopt her as long as it is a one dog home.

I will be amazed if she gets adopted. She would need a home where people are home all day or can take her to work. Or she would need one perfect doggie friend so that she doesn't howl when left alone. That's going to be very hard to find.

The thing is, this pup sounds like a future work dog, rather than a pet.
What are the prospects in that field?

Kobold, unfortunately none. There are too many pits and pit mixes because people like to fight them. They aren't farm dogs or police/search and rescue dogs.

Kobold, I change my answer. Wikipedia says pit bulls have been used as police, border patrol, drug dogs and other service dogs. I don't think I've seen any. They are good in dog sport competitions. My pit mix likes to sleep a lot but if there was a squeaky toy destruction competition then she would do great. And a question for you, do you have a lot of Vizsla dogs there? I had never heard of the breed but in the last month there were 2 dogs labeled as pit mixes and someone said they were Vizsla mix not pit so I looked it up. Interesting dog.

Daisy, Vizsla is a hunting dog. Very unlike pitbulls.
I thought of property guarding as work for the pitbull - along with rottweilers and alsatians. Around here they used to be used for that before they got banned. (There are still many around, but in decreasing numbers.)

KoBold, I did not know pit bulls were banned there. That is interesting. My pit mix would not be a good guard dog. She doesn't bark much and would only guard against other animals and an invasion of squeaky toys. She likes people.
