Splurging On Groceries

Food is so expensive these days and anything not on my list seems like a splurge. I went grocery shopping after work and let myself linger in the produce section. It is always better if I do my splurging in the produce section rather than the cookie aisle. I was down to a few potatoes and a little bit of frozen vegetables at home so I bought enough produce for the whole month: yellow squash, carrots, oranges, apples, tomatoes, lettuce, and my non-ordinary purchases: 2 avocados and a pomegranate.

I have been wanting to buy a pomegranate for weeks but they were $3 a piece. Then they went on sale for 2 for $5. Today they were 2 for $4 so I bought one. I love pomegranates. They remind me of my childhood. We had a neighbor when I was little who handed out pomegranates for Halloween. I loved that. When I bought my house I wanted to plant a fruit tree in the yard. I wanted an orange tree but they are frost sensitive and need protection when they are young (too much work). Then I discovered that pomegranate trees grow here so I bought one for $30 and planted it in the yard. It was supposed to be MY pomegranate tree but now that the house is a rental, I don't get any pomegranates. The current renters didn't know what the strange fruit was and asked me if it was poisonous. Too bad they don't appreciate it. Gee, at $2 a pomegranate, 15 fruit from the store equals the cost of the whole tree! Maybe, when I am finally settled somewhere, I can plant another pomegranate tree or some other fruit tree. It is one of my many goals. It kind of conflicts with the wanting to be a snowbird goal since a fruit tree needs water all summer but I'm sure I'll figure something out.

I had someone give me some pecans from their tree recently. I have always wanted a pecan tree - maybe I need to plant one already.

Did you get any cookies at all?

I would like to have a cookie tree one day. Or a donut patch :)

We used to have a pecan tree when I was a kid. We didn't get many pecans. I don't know what it's problem was.

No cookies. I resisted because I told myself I could make them with ingredients that I already have if I really want them.

A cookie tree would be nice. I would like a triple citrus tree which is a lime, lemon and orange grafted together I think. There is a fruit cocktail tree that looks cool too. Nectarine, peach, plum and apricot on the same tree. It probably doesn't grow out here.

Hi there-It is your house, I would take them if I were you!! We have a tree that grows little cherry/plum things and the lady over the road just helps herself to them in the summer-i don't mind if someone else gets to enjoy them, haha!

Shew...as long as you have some way of getting cookies. I was worried there for a bit.

That fruit cocktail tree sounds very cool.

Hi, Daizy!

I don't personally see the problem with you going by to get some pomegranates off your own tree. It's true, it's a grey area because you have rented it, and you didn't make an agreement with them about the pomegranate fruits, but I think they would go along with you coming by to get them depending on how you approached it.

I once rented a place from a man who had apple trees. It was clearly understood that they were his trees, although we were welcome to some of the fruit.

Maybe you could just call them up near pomegranate season and let them know you are planning to come by to get some pomegranates from the tree but that you're not going to be coming in the house. If they're interested in them you might mention that since they are renting, they are welcome to share half or whatever portion of the pomegranates seems right for the situation.

Probably they don't even want to eat them and you can have as many as you feel like

My two cents' worth!

Maybe I'll set up an arrangement with my next renter. I'm not even sure if the tree is still alive!
